On January 5th, New York City’s Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola quietly hosted the funeral of Tatiana Schlossberg, granddaughter of JFK and Caroline Kennedy’s middle daughter.

The private service, exclusively obtained by People, brought together Caroline Kennedy, her husband Ed Schlossberg, their children, and Tatiana’s siblings, Rose and Jack, Tatiana's widower George, and their children Edwin and Josephine.

For many, the loss of Tatiana at just 35 is heartbreakingly familiar. Kennedy historian Steven M. Gillon told People that her death is a tragic echo of past family sorrows.

The Many Losses Of Caroline Kennedy

“When you think about the losses Caroline has suffered, it was only [her brother] John that had suffered the same—and then she lost John. For Caroline, it’s a series of horrible personal tragedies that lead up to what may be the hardest of them all,” he explained.

The eldest daughter of JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy has lived a life marked by a series of profound and public tragedies that began in her childhood and continued into her adult life, culminating in the recent death of middle child.

Maybe Caroline was too young at age five to remember (born November 27, 1957), but her younger brother, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, was born prematurely in August 1963 and died just 39 hours later from severe respiratory issues.

That same year the little girl lost her father when he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

Her mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in May 1994 at the young age of 64.

At that point Caroline's only sibling, John F. Kennedy Jr., died in a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard in July 1999, along with his wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her sister Lauren Bessette.

A Rare Terminal Blood Cancer Stalked Tatiana

Then in December her daughter aged 35 died after battling acute myeloid leukemia, a rare and terminal blood cancer.

Tatiana, a talented environmental journalist and writer, revealed her terminal diagnosis in a November 2025 essay for The New Yorker, in which she expressed sorrow for adding "another tragedy" to her mother's life.

Ms. Schlossberg was more than descended from the powerful Kennedy family. Her words carried wisdom beyond her years.

In December, she penned a deeply moving prescient essay in the esteemed New Yorker magazine. Her unsolicited op-ed reflected on her own mortality—an gut wrenching piece that now frames the final chapter of her life.

A Rare Reminder Of How History Repeats Itself

Her death is a rare and piercing reminder of how history and personal grief can intertwine, even in a family whose name is synonymous with resilience, public service, and, heartbreakingly, loss.
