Popover Recipe From Karen Marie Shelton Vintage Recipes Cookbook
In the quiet hours of April 2005, my life shattered. My best friend and husband of 23 years slipped away in my arms. The world I knew, the love we had built together, vanished in an instant.
For an entire year, I wandered through a haze of grief. Even then, it took nearly three years before I dared to open my heart again.
Mikey's sudden loss began a whirlwind of change that swept me through the next decade.
I found myself moving in and out of four homes, four offices and gathering mountains of white storage boxes along the way.
Treasures Hidden In The Boxes In My Garage
They were overflowing with books, papers, and fragments of my life from birth onward. For years, I could not summon the courage, or the strength, to lift a lid and step back into time.
But on the 20th anniversary of his passing, I finally did. And what I discovered was nothing short of a miracle.
Hidden in those boxes were treasures. I discovered handwritten recipes and cherished cookbooks passed down through generations of my Irish and German family.
Among them were the dishes my late husband and I had shared during the happiest moments of our love stor which started in St. Louis and ended in Dallas.
Biscuits And Gravy
I remembered our Sunday brunches at Houlihan’s in West County where we fell in love over biscuits and gravy. We celebrated our joyous wedding at Cunetto’s on the St. Louis Hill with toasted ravioli.
Every recipe I held in my hands became a vessel of memory, scent, flavor, and love intertwined. It brought back laughter, warmth, and tears alike.
At first, I wondered what to do with these little pieces of my past. Could I cook them for my current family? Yes, but what if these memories were lost again, buried forever with me?
Each card, scribbled note and cookbook was much more than just a recipe. It was a story of heartbreak, healing, and hope. A testament to love’s endurance.
Then inspiration hit me like a perfectly timed spice blend. Why not create a cookbook that goes beyond recipes? A book that captures the heartbeats behind each dish.
I could craft a collection that preserves the flavors, the laughter, the love, and the life lessons of my family. It could be a book that holds the magic of the journey that made me who I am today.
A Labor of Love
The result of my labor is more than a cookbook. It’s a love letter. A story of grief and grace, of heartache and healing, of the small joys that carry us through life.
My hope is that every person who opens this book feels the warmth, the nostalgia, and the comfort that these recipes have given me. And that they create their own moments of love and connection along the way.
Thank you for sharing this journey with me. From my heart to yours, with all my love.
