Valentine heart cupcake toppers
Hearts for Valentine's Day or any day you want to send love!

These Valentine’s Day heart cupcake toppers are not only free and printable, they’re also really versatile. The design comes in two looks: polka dots and a modern swirl, and in two Valentine colors: red and magenta.

They can be created to be used as two-dimensional hearts on toothpicks or on cocktail picks (those are slightly larger than toothpicks and, at my grocery store anyway, can usually be found in varying lengths).

They can also be made as 3D toppers by folding the hearts in half with the printed side inwards and gluing them back-to-back. That part brings even more versatility, because you can mix and match the polka dots with the swirls.

And to make even more variations, you can use a variety of ribbons tied around the toothpicks beneath the hearts to dress them up.

You can make these with one panel or more, and mix and match the patterns and colors

To give you an idea of the size of these party pick toppers, I used mini cupcakes and decorated large marshmallows to display them in the photographs.

I purchased the mini cupcakes from Whole Foods, and I created the decorated marshmallows using cookie icing (which dries harder and more solidly than cake icing) and some cute Valentine nonpareils I bought from Target. I also purchased a container of multiple spools of Valentine’s Day ribbon from Target. It contains just enough of each ribbon design to decorate two picks.

Here are some tips for making these heart toppers:

  • Print the template, which can be downloaded below, using the heaviest cardstock your printer will allow. I usually use matte cardstock to make toppers, but this time I used glossy. I liked the effect it gave, since these topper designs are modern.
  • For best results, use sharp, curved manicure scissors to cut out the hearts. To make the 3D toppers, use a repositionable glue stick to stick the hearts together.
  • Carefully fold the first of six hearts (printed side in), and once it’s perfectly in half, score it with your fingernail to make a crease down the middle. Then, glue the first two pieces together and do the same with the other two sets. Let these dry, as repositionable glue takes some time to set. Once they are dry, you can glue them together, leaving one panel open to insert the toothpick. After that, run a line of regular glue down the center so the toothpick won’t slip out later. When finished, glue the last piece in place.
